What it is
Both fighters lock in a move. Both hands flip at the same instant. Whoever read the other correctly wins the exchange.
There is no reaction window and no execution barrier — no combos, no frame-perfect inputs, no reflexes. What decides a match is whether you predicted what your opponent was about to do, and whether you were willing to spend the resource to punish it.
For players who like Slay the Spire, Footsies, or Inscryption — the read, without the execution.
Core mechanic
Both players choose in secret. Both choices resolve at once.
| Move | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Weak | Always connects (100%). Low reward. Breaks a Guard. |
| Strong | 70% to connect. High reward, high risk — and it whiffs outright against a much faster opponent. |
| Guard | Stops Strong cold. Loses to Weak. |
On top of the triangle sit utility moves — COUNTER (80% to land, and only against an attack), speed manipulation, taunts, and one unique move per fighter.
The risk is calculated, not random. Strong at 70% and Counter at 80% are poker odds, not a slot machine — the question is always when is this hand worth playing.
Meter
Every resource you spend now is a resource you don't have three turns from now. Holding is a real option. So is going broke to close out a round.
Crowd on fire
A shared crowd meter rises when someone gets read — not when someone deals damage. Fill it and both fighters get paid. The spectacle rewards the exchange, not the beatdown.
The world
Six fighters, each with their own tactics, their own story, and their own ending. Behind all of them is ARCHITECT — a sealed AI whose reason for staging these duels is the thing you are actually playing toward.
All three are self-imposed-restriction clears — the game asks you to win the same arcade run with one of your tools taken away.
| No-Guard Clear | Clear an arcade run with Guard sealed. |
| No-Signature Clear | Clear an arcade run with signatures sealed. |
| All Fighters Cleared | Clear an arcade run with all six fighters. |
Sealing Guard removes one whole side of the triangle, which is the clearest way to see what the read is actually doing.

A simultaneous-reveal mind game. Both hands flip at once — whoever reads it right, wins.
SYNTAX WARS is a one-on-one mind game where both fighters lock in a move and reveal it at the same instant. Strong beats Weak, Weak beats Guard, Guard beats Strong — but Strong only connects 70% of the time, so every turn is a bet you have to be willing to pay for. No combos, no reflexes. Only reads.
SYNTAX WARS is a one-on-one mind game built on a single moment: both fighters choose in secret, and both hands flip at once. There is no reaction window and no execution barrier. What decides the exchange is whether you predicted what the other player was about to do.
The core is a three-way triangle — Strong beats Weak, Weak beats Guard, Guard beats Strong — with real odds underneath it. Weak always connects. Strong connects 70% of the time and whiffs outright against a much faster opponent. Counter lands 80% of the time, and only against an attack. These are poker odds, not a slot machine: the question is never whether you got lucky, it is whether that hand was worth playing at that moment. Meter makes it heavier still — every resource spent now is one you will not have three turns from now.

About
Mosan Game Studio is one person. SYNTAX WARS is built alongside a day job — the design, the art direction, the combat math, and the store page. The pitch and the schedule are the same size as one pair of hands, which is why the game is narrow and deep rather than wide.
